A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reminded me why I first fell in love with Westeros. George R.R. Martin strips away the sweeping politics and dragons of Game of Thrones to give us something purer—an old-fashioned, deeply human adventure about honor, friendship, and the quiet weight of doing what’s right in a crooked world. Ser Duncan the Tall and young Egg make an unlikely but irresistible pair: one earnest and towering, the other small and sharp as a dagger, both trying to find their place in a realm that rarely rewards decency. Martin’s prose here is a feast upon the English language—rich, rhythmic, and vivid enough to smell the dust on the tourney grounds. It’s a story of chivalry with dirt under its nails, full of heart, melancholy, and humor in equal measure. Simply put, this is Westeros at its most intimate—and Martin at his best.
